Spread Christmas values all year

Let us remember the values of Christmas and spread them throughout the year, says Archbishop Edward Gilbert.

Speaking at the end-of-year luncheon at Nazareth House last Sunday, the archbishop urged residents to make those values, like the love of God, love of family and community  “live here” at the House and spread it to those they meet.

The annual luncheon at the Duncan Street, Port of Spain landmark is usually held the last Sunday of the year; it is jointly organised by the Knights of St John International and the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP), which operates Nazareth House.

The Trinidad & Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) Band, under the baton of Sergeant Ashby, once again played seasonal music while residents and other guests dined on a meal typical for the season.

SVP administrative secretary Yvette Woodruffe brought greetings on behalf of the residents, Grand president Ernest Perez spoke on behalf of the Knights, and SVP president Rudolph Boneo spoke on behalf of the Society.

Perez wished all the best for 2008 and remembered former president Baldwin Clovis, present at the 2007 event but who passed away during the year.

Boneo thanked the Knights saying the luncheon was “a fitting event to close off their 150th anniversary year.”

He said the Society will continue to remain open to community involvement and partnerships with like minded organisations.

He wished the best to all for 2008 and then presented a 150th anniversary commemorative mug to the Archbishop.

Woodruffe noted the Feast of Holy Family was being celebrated that Sunday and said everyone present was part of the Nazareth House family, including the Defence Force. She wished health and strength to TTDF members in 2008.

Corporal Garvin Weekes, seated at the head table as the TTDF representative, also wished all best for the New Year. Greetings were also brought by a representative of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Hollis Simon of the Knights of St John presented the Archbishop with a contribution to the Regional Seminary.

Archbishop Gilbert repeated comments he made at various events, saying if it wasn’t for the Society and organisations like the Knights, many people would be on the streets.  “It is an extraordinary ministry”, he added.

He thanked the TTDF, reminding all that at this time of year we see their “kind and charitable” side but we must remember that they have to deal with mean and unprincipled people.

He extended gratitude to them on behalf of the Catholic Church for ensuring the nation remains secure. He thanked the Knights for their contribution to the Seminary, promising to pass it on to the rector.

Before distributing financial tokens to residents and staff, he wished all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  - RS
