Mohammad Mustafa, a senior at Ss. Peter and Paul School, was among six students honoured at a January 18 Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, memorial organised by the Hebrew Congregation of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands.
The annual ceremony, done in the synagogue within the context of the Reform Jewish worship service, honours one student from each of St Thomas’ high schools. Principals or guidance counsellors nominated these students for leading lives that exemplify Dr King's teachings.
In addition to the recognition, the students receive a $500 US Savings Bond and a book, Shared Dreams: Martin Luther King and the Jewish Community.
The Erev Shabbat service was followed by a reception across the street in the congregation's Lilienfeld House.
MEANWHILE, Catholic schools in the St Thomas diocese will join their counterparts across the United States to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, January 27 – February 2. Theme is Catholic Schools Light the way. (Catholic Islander) |
