'Woman of Faith' makes a century

Lyris McShine-MonsantoIn March 2007 RUTH, our woman’s supplement, featured Lyris Mc Shine-Monsanto as the “Woman of Faith”. Today, Sunday, February 24, Lyris celebrates her 100th birthday with Mass and a birthday party that she herself has organised.

As vibrant in faith and spirit as she was a year ago when interviewed by Denise Scott, Lyris continues to be an inspiration to many to “Trust in God”.
Happy Birthday, Aunty Lyris, God’s continued blessings as you mark this milestone!

Chaguanas parishioner celebrates 100th birthday

Iris Saunders from the Parish of St Philip & St James, Chaguanas celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday, February 22.

Iris SaundersIris was born to Abiah and Nehemiah Saunders in St Patrick’s, Grenada on February 22,1908. The second of four children, she received her early education at Chantimille Government School in Grenada.

She migrated at the age of 20 and worked as a cook for the Americans at the Carenage Base. At the age of 35, she moved to Chaguanas and continued to cook for the locals and later was known to have the sweetest stew pork and best mango jam in the area.

She is the mother of Anthony, Ivan, Yvonne, Roslyn and James, grandmother of six, great-grandmother of eight and great-great grandmother of two.

In spite of a dim vision and impaired hearing, Iris remains coherent.
A devoted Catholic, Iris remains an active and beloved member in the community, and is showered with the loving attention of her family both here and abroad.

We thank God for her and the long life that he has granted her.
Congratulations Iris! God’s richest blessings.
