Fr Moses passes on

Fr Michael Moses
Fr Michael Moses

Diocesan priest Fr Michael Moses passed away last Wednesday morning, March 12, after his battle with cancer.

Born in San Fernando on June 26, 1957, to Toufik and Zakie Moses, he was ordained to the priesthood June 19, 1988, by Archbishop Anthony Pantin. Also ordained in that ceremony were Curepe parish priest Fr Benedict Peters, and close friend Sangre Grande parish priest Fr Ian Taylor.

A past student of Presentation College, San Fernando, Fr Moses studied at UWI, Cave Hill, Barbados for three years, completing his final year at the UWI, St Augustine campus. He was a founding member of the UWI Prayer Group.

After attending a Caribbean Catholic Charismatic Renewal event in 1979, he became involved in the national movement through Word of Life Community, in which he was a covenant member and was often seen at the side of leader “Aunty Babsie” Bleasdell. One of his last public appearances earlier this year was at the Caribbean Catholic Charismatic Renewal conference.

For many years Fr Moses prepared the monthly Bible Supplement of this paper with his team, and ministered through the Bible Institute in Caroni.

Fr Moses resigned from the Social Justice Commission effective December 31, 2007, because of ill health. He had replaced attorney-at-law Leela Ramdeen, who resigned in March 2006.

Fr Moses last ministered as parish priest in San Rafael, but also served in the parishes of Santa Rosa, Arima; Malabar and Sangre Grande.

His funeral Mass was expected to be held Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The Catholic News extends sincere and prayerful condolences to the parents, brothers and extended family of Fr Moses, the diocesan clergy, and “Auntie Babsie” and the Word of Life community.

May he rest in peace
