A memorable 80th birthday
By Gregg Durham

Many would say we dream to live to at least 60 in today’s society; well it is a reality for Gloria Spencer who not only passed 60 years but celebrated her 80th birthday on the August 15.

She celebrated with a thanksgiving service at the Living Water Community on the August 23 along with her close friends and family. Two of her friends, Rhonda Maingot and Susan Dore, whose birthdays were around the same time as Gloria’s also shared in the celebration.

The Mass was celebrated by Frs Jason Gordon and Christopher Lumsden, two priests who hold a special place in her heart. In his homily Fr Gordon was recalled Gloria’s life. He described her as a person who rode with kings and queens.

She was also remembered as the one who led the Mercy Rosary at the centre and always took time to make the hops and ham for the centre every Saturday morning despite how ill she was.

Her friends recalled memories of her beautiful boutique, a place that carried the most beautiful gowns one could admire. Many shared fond memories of a woman who has had quite an accomplished life.

All the hymns the choir sang so beautifully were chosen especially for Gloria, from the solo rendition of To God Be the Glory to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

After the Mass, everyone was invited to lunch downstairs in the centre; a delicious meal was prepared by the kitchen staff of Living Water and complimented by the music of her godson Neil Seapaul.

It was truly a day of enjoyment for her and even though she depends on her cane to walk she still made her rounds to meet and greet everyone warmly. She truly is a spectacle of wonder.

At the age of 80 she still continues going to Living Water every day to participate in the Mass – a true covenant member.

May God continue to bless and keep her and shower her with richest blessings.
