Fr Clement Jolly CSsR believes now is the time for the Church to make the most of whatever challenges it faces.

“Yes, it is very painful to be a Catholic priest today, but it is a privileged time,” said Fr Jolly in obvious reference to the child abuse scandal. He added, however, that the Church “is at her best when she is at a state of crisis.”

The “eastern branch” of Catholic News is now officially closed as staff member Marilyn Ramsumair has entered a new phase of life - retirement.

Marilyn was the welcoming voice for many callers, and the first face visitors to our offices saw as she sat at her desk in the reception area. Her main responsibility, however, was in circulation: preparing the weekly numbers of papers to be printed, managing overseas subscriptions and parish circulation figures. Marilyn also assisted in the advertising department, and typing editorial copy.

Known for her efficiency, simplicity and modesty, Marilyn would have preferred a quiet send off. This she got as Camsel organised a simple retirement function at the Marriot Hotel, Invaders Bay on Friday, August 27.

Among those present to wish Marilyn well in her retirement years were former editor, Fr Michel de Verteuil CSSp, who was responsible for bringing her into the Catholic News family in 1998; sport columnist and former national footballer Sedley Joseph, whom she called – as a rule – every fortnight to gently remind him to send his column; Camsel chief operations officer Rev Lennox Toussaint; and financial administrator for the archdiocese, Bernadette Patrick. Chairman of Camsel Board, Richard Young and Vicar for Administration and board member Msgr Jason Gordon were also present.

Having traced the history of the notion in the Western world, we are now in a position to turn more directly to the actual obstacles in the way arriving at a consensus on the ‘common good’ as it pertains to the communities of the southwest and the proposed aluminium smelters.
