GRENADA Rosary beads in hand? What about your water? Are you wearing comfortable footwear? From today, November 29, Catholic faithful in Grenada will get some good exercise in Jubilee 100 Mile Walk for Mary. Yes, 100 miles. The Walk, sponsored by Bishop Vincent Darius, OP, begins from Norton Hall in St George’s following the 8 a.m. Mass. The first of ten legs takes pilgrims through the districts of Fontenoy, Happy Hill, Brizan, Concord and finally Grand Roy.Walk coordinator Fr William O’Carroll said pilgrims will visit 50 churches across the diocese - Grenada and Carriacou, Petit Martinique and Isle des Hirondelles - over the next 11 days. “The purpose… is first to give honour to Mary the Mother of God and secondly to raise funds for the completion of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception,” said Fr O’Carroll, who celebrates 50 years as a priest this year. The cathedral is being reconstructed following damage it received in 2004 during Hurricane Ivan. Each day of the Walk begins with Holy Mass. On Day 8, December 6, pilgrims will have a short break as they will meet other Catholic faithful at Grenada’s national stadium for the diocesan celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The following day pilgrims will walk onto the Osprey ferry as the Walk goes overseas to the island of Petit Martinique. Later that day, the ferry will transport pilgrims to the neighbouring island of Carriacou. On the final day, December 8, the solemnity will be celebrated with Mass: the route passes through L’Esterre, Harvey Vale, Bogles, Windward, Top Hill and finally, Hillsborough. Pilgrims return to the mainland via the Osprey on December 9. Donations to the Cathedral reconstruction fund can be sent to Fr O’Carroll: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, PO Box 224, Church Street, St George’s, Grenada.
