The diocese of St George’s, Grenada, has opened its fourth home for aged persons. Gift of Love - Mother Teresa’s Home was blessed December 14 by St David’s parish priest Fr Gerard Paul. Bishop Vincent Darius, OP cut the ribbon to formally open the home, which will be managed by the Missionaries of Charity, popularly called ‘Mother Teresa Sisters’. Prior to the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony, a Mass was concelebrated at the home, with Bishop Darius as main celebrant. Beside religious sisters, workers and well-wishers, the congregation also included a group from Trinidad that travelled to Grenada for the occasion. Three priests from Trinidad also joined local priests to concelebrate the Mass. In his homily Bishop Darius said the original gift of land to the Church was a gift of love, while the service of the Missionaries of Charity is also an ongoing gift of love to the people of Grenada.
The land on which the home is now situated was donated by the late Louisa Mark; the home was built with funds donated to the Missionaries of Charity by benefactors from around the world. Bishop Darius with Sr Adlyn and other Missionaries of Charity at the new home. Sr Adlyn Grace MC will be manager of the home; she will be assisted by Srs Francis, Abigail and Celestie. In her vote of thanks Sr Abigail paid tribute to Roy Hall for his free service as project consultant, and Tizen Construction for completing the project on time. Residents are accepted on the basis of need with preference being given to those who are most destitute. There are currently seven residents in the home. It is hoped that in the future the home will care for patients who are terminally ill with cancer or AIDS, who have no one to care for them. The other homes for the aged in the diocese are Hillsview Home at Gouyave, St Martin de Porres Home at Crochu, and the Hilarian Home at Sauteurs.
