Dominica-born Sr Martha Sebastian made her final profession and became a sister of St Joseph of Cluny (SJC) on August 22 at Our Lady of Fair Haven Cathedral, Roseau.

Chief celebrant Archbishop Robert Rivas, OP of the archdiocese of Castries, St Lucia, said by making her final profession she was embarking on “a lifelong commitment to Christ, a life giving sacrifice, a gift of one self forever.”

“In a world of liquid modernity you have demonstrated your obedience, dedication and belief in God. You are standing for something symbolic, you are entering a commitment and relationship forever.”

Noting that it means, “tall is her body”, Archbishop Rivas told Sr Martha, “That’s what I want you to be - tall and slender doing the work of the Lord.”

As part of the profession, Sr Martha was presented with a gold wedding band to signify her marriage to Christ forever.
“Receive this ring for you are betrothed to the eternal king. Keep true faith with Christ so that you may come to the wedding feast of eternal joy,” the archbishop said.
Sr Martha, who was born in Portsmouth, told the Dominican weekly, The Chronicle she first became interested in religious life at the age of 10.

The former St John’s School, and Portsmouth Secondary School student realised that she wanted to become a Cluny sister at the age of 18 after being inspired by the congregation’s work and devotion.
Sr Martha, who migrated to St Vincent where she lived with the SJC community for two years and will be based there, encouraged young women interested in consecrated religious life to keep their focus and, “find someone who you can share with and pray with. I would encourage them to find someone who can help and guide them to make wise decisions.” (Edited from The Chronicle)
