DEAR EDITOR: I refer to the article “Seeing Jesus Again (2)”.
Two quotes are highlighted:
Quote (end of article), “Is research like this of any real use?”
Quote (start of article), “Many people introduced to the study of the New Testament are always surprised to learn that Jesus very likely did not say some of the things attributed to Him in the gospels. Their response to this ‘discovery' is to say, if He didn't say this, how do you know when He said anything? How can I trust anything you say He said? If He didn't say it, then who did?”
2. Not laying claim to theological wisdom, my grasp of the Scriptures, imperfect though it be, led to an understanding of why the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. Our blessed Lord laid claim to His Divinity – not merely, “ I am the vine; you are the branches ” (metaphor), but “ I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life .” (John 8:12 et seq)
Post Resurrrection evidence – “The Road to Emmaus” – Luke 24:13-35 (The Bread of Life) is instructive.
3. The faith of our fathers is well founded.
4. Jesus is seen today, visually, by other Christian believers, question this, though we may!
5. The Catholic faith claims that Jesus is really present (Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity) under the appearances of Bread and Wine (Eucharistic Sacrifice). In this regard, reference to the ordained priest is “ alter Cristus ”. Did Jesus say that? Did the early Christian communities say that? We accept it.
6. Our striving must be to nourish the lives of the flock FOR JESUS LIVES WITHIN OUR HEARTS.
