Beach lime in Mayaro

by Bernadine Sankar

On Saturday, February 18, the parishioners of Manzanilla and its communities journeyed to Mayaro for their annual parish beach lime. This was one of the activities that came out of the Better World programme.

Over ten years ago, Fr Johnny Woods (now deceased) came to Manzanilla and introduced us to the Better World programme.

This programme brought tremendous benefits to our parish. Our vision was to bring all people together in unity, love and friendship with emphasis on friendly visitation and building of neighbourhood groups.

In order to achieve our vision, activities were planned at community and parish level.

Some of the activities at parish level included a Beach lime, Lenten Walk, Sport Day and an Advent Assembly.

Our beach lime this year was not very well attended.

However we managed to carry out some of our usual activities – dominos, cards and calypso competitions.

Kizzy from the Biche community came first in the domino competition, Sherri James from the Manzanilla community placed first in the card game and Bernadine Sankar from the Manzanilla community won the title “Calypso Monarch 2006” with her rendition A Tribute to Fr Johnny Woods.

Despite the small attendance at the beach lime, it was an enjoyable and relaxing day for those who attended. Even the very young enjoyed the day. We are very grateful for the good work Fr Johnny did in our parish.

The seeds of love that he sowed will blossom and flourish as we continue to work together in building up God's kingdom and so making our world a better place in which to live.
