Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny are a congregation founded 200 years ago in 1807. At the beginning the sisters worked mostly in education, but today, their ministry has spread. The sisters are involved in different kinds of work; nursing, retreat work, counselling and many other fields of the apostolate.

In this, their bicentennial year the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny, spread throughout the world, are celebrating this auspicious occasion in a big way.

In Trinidad the celebrations began in November 2006. During the course of the year many activities have taken place, and many are yet to come as the sisters celebrate until November 2007.

On May 12, the actual 200th day, special celebrations took place all over the world. The sisters in Trinidad held a “Walk for Peace” on Friday, May 11.

Participating in this walk were children from the various schools that are run by the sisters of St Joseph.

The walks were decentralised allowing for easier participation and organisation with the schools.

The walks took place in four areas of Trinidad, San Fernando (St Joseph’s Convent, St Gabriel’s Girls Primary school and Penal Rock Primary school); Arima (Arima Girls’ RC Primary, Arouca Girls’ RC Primary); St Joseph (St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph’s Girls’ RC Primary, St Xavier’s Private School, Fatima Girls’ RC); Port of Spain (Providence Girls’ Catholic School, Maria Regina Grade School, Mucurapo Girls’ RC Primary, St Patrick’s Girls’ RC, Sacred Heart Girls’ RC, Nelson Street Girls’ RC and Servol).

During the course of the walk, which began at 9.00 a.m. opposite TGIF at Queen’s Park Savannah, students carried flags and banners while chanting and singing for peace.

It was hoped, by the sisters of St Joseph, that this walk will bring the message of peace to the hearts of all and that this peace is especially reflected in the behaviour of citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
