Bishop Donald J Reece officially blessed and opened the radio station of the Diocese of St John’s –Basseterre on April 23, Divine Mercy Sunday.
The bishop gave a background history of how long it took to get that dream to a reality. In a brief review, he said that the diocese was waiting for almost 10 years for a license to establish the radio station. The license was approved in 2002 by the previous Government of Antigua and Barbuda.
The radio station is managed by a 10-member commission with Fr George Williams being the chairman and the programme director of the radio station. Fr Tony Jeroncic is the technical director along with Joseph Richards as the plant supervisor.
The radio is on air for 24 hours, but has an eight-hour daily scheduled programming. The radio has brought a new variety of music and sound to Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis.
The programming consists of religious talks and music, secular music with inspiring lyrics, two talk shows, one on the family and the other on social issues, a two-hour Creole programme with the St Lucians and Dominicans in mind, and other uplifting cultural elements.
Another addition to the programming is a one-hour Spanish show.
It is the intention of the team at the radio station to ensure that the transmission is carried throughout the islands of the diocese.
