Although the contribution of the elderly is often overlooked in Trinidad and Tobago, the local Catholic Church has not treated this matter lightly. Through the work of one of its organisations, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, it has demonstrated the truism that the elderly must not be rejected.

Guests at the luncheon

In light of the mandate of its founders, St Vincent de Paul and Blessed Frederick Ozanam, the Santa Rosa Conference of the SVP, led by president Ita Lewis and her hard-working team members, hosted a luncheon on Saturday, July 21, 2007.

This special luncheon was an occasion to honour the elderly and in celebration of the SVP’s 150th anniversary. Msgr Christian Pereira, parish priest for Santa Rosa, Arima, under whose spiritual guidance and inspiration the organisation functions, performed the invocation.

The function was very well attended. Many of the elderly from Santa Rosa and environs came, bringing along grandchildren, children, nieces and nephews. Entertainment and a lavish lunch were the highlight of the day’s proceedings.

Special mention must be made of Dame Louise Horne, former independent senator, who graced us with her presence. It was also joyous to us that no rain fell on that day and fine weather was enjoyed throughout the proceedings. Souvenirs were presented to everyone
and a good time had by all.

Indeed it was a success. God certainly had a guiding hand in this celebration.
