Former president Noor Hassanali’s life of humble service will be “a tremendous model and guide to our nation”. So said the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Monsignor Christian Pereira, in a press statement issued shortly after Mr Hassanali died at his Westmoorings home on Friday, August 25.

Msgr Pereira said, “The Roman Catholic Church mourns the passing of His Excellency…
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife and family with the assurance of our prayer for his eternal happiness in God’s Kingdom.”
Mr Hassanali, a devout Muslim, was buried the same day he died during a private ceremony at the Western Cemetery in St James, as he had requested. He leaves to mourn his wife Zalayhar, son Khalid and daughter Amena.
Mr Hassanali served as President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago from 1987 to 1997 after he retired as a Justice of Appeal of the Supreme Court.
Msgr Pereira said in his statement, “Mr Hassanali served this country in an exemplary manner in many roles in public office, but most of his entire legacy of humble service in all areas of his public service will be a tremendous model and guide to our nation as we celebrate yet another anniversary of our Independence.”
