Peter Gay began his ministry as an acolyte (altar boy) at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in 1956.
In those days it was the Tridentine Mass (Latin), there were no female servers and one had to know the responses and learn to serve at Low Mass before serving at High Mass. Peter learned and gained experience as a senior server.
Some of the faithful Catholics he served with in his earlier years are: the John brothers, Sandy brothers, Chow brothers, the Barrington’s, Weeks, Joseph’s, Valvie Hernandez, Brian Connell and the Callender brothers.
He also participated in football matches against other teams and led the Cathedral team in a knockout tournament. This faithful member also assisted the then sexton Carl Major with his functions on many occasions.
He also was a member of the Cathedral CYO, Legion of Mary, Holy Name sodality and the Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Corps Band for over 25 years. Having served the Cathedral with dedication and with a highly responsible attitude, he was appointed master of ceremonies by former Archbishop of Port of Spain, Anthony Pantin in 1971.
He assisted at many ordinations, for example, those of Monsignors Christian Pereira and Esau Joseph, Frs Clyde Harvey, Dwight Merrick and many others. At present Peter functions as a cantor and lay minister and is also employed as a customs officer.
For 25 years he is also married to Ann Gay, also a very faithful Catholic. Peter Calvin Gay has served this Church for 50 years with quality service, with great consistent fidelity and love of God.
The Pastoral Council and parishioners of the Cathedral and Church of the Scared Heart congratulate this minister for this milestone of service, wishing him God richest blessings. |
