Grenadians display cooking skills
to raise funds for parishes
By Samantha Roberts, parishoner, St. Michael's, Woburn

Saturday, August 11, Catholics in Grenada showcased their cooking and decorating talents for a second time at “Catholics can Cook”.

The event was held at the Grenada Trade Center and brought some 1000 persons together to have fun and celebrate with traditional food, which justified the theme chosen, “Building Communities through the Spirit.”

There were 14 booths from 14 parish communities around the country – each parish chose a sub-theme and showcased food preparation talents appropriate to their theme.

Many prizes were won including a door prize, and a prize for the best overall booth.

The winning booth received EC$1000.00 – last year there was a tie between two churches from the same parish – St Andrew’s - Birchgrove RC Church and Grenville RC Church shared that honour but this year Birchgrove decided that it would go home with the total prize and edged out all the others.

Judges are selected from among the Catholic clergy and from other denominations with the aim of share this social event with others.

When asked about the timing of the event, Mrs Braithwaite, one of the organisers, remarked that on Carnival Saturday in Grenada there is no major event, “Catholics can Cook” provides an opportunity for the visitors and returnees to meet old friends, make new ones and get real traditional dishes – one of the things they look forward to when they come home. Prizes were donated by popular corporate citizens in Grenada like Digicel.

Even the Sister Isles of Carriacou and Petit Martinique participated this year making the event even more memorable.

The event met its fund-raising aims. The funds raised go back into the community for development programmes.
