The patronal feast of our beautiful church in Princes Town is celebrated on the September 14 – the Feast of Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross RC Church situated on Buen Intento Road in Princes Town, bears the cross on its steeple. Its majestic stance enables it to be viewed from the busy town. The Cross, recalling the death of Jesus Christ, reminds us that it is the way of our salvation, our strength in times of temptation, relief in times of suffering, courage in times of fear and peace in times of turmoil.
Great things happened for our church on its patronal feast. Our church was blessed by the late Archbishop Anthony Pantin on September 14, 1998. Our Liturgy of Dedication, its Consecration, was done on Sunday, September 14, 2003 by Archbishop Edward Gilbert.
In preparation for our feast day, there was a novena from Friday, September 8 to Saturday 16, the theme of which was The Cross in these Challenging Times. Our Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us from our sins. His death on the cross was the ransom to free all human beings, without exception, from the slavery of sin.
Those who plunge themselves into disorders and crimes crucify Jesus anew in their hearts. We remember that God loves us. He sent His son, Jesus, to redeem us, so that we might be reconciled to Him.
The sub-themes of this novena were as follows:
Friday 8 – “The Mystery of Suffering” by Archdeacon Primus of the Anglican Church
Monday 11 - “Spectator or Follower” by Cecil Colthrust of Mon Repos parish
Tuesday 12 - “Love on a Cross” by Jacqueline Charles of La Romaine parish
Wednesday 13 - “The Bliss of the Breaker Down (Peacemaker)”by Fr Allan Ventour of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, San Fernando
Thursday 14 – “Putting on Christ” by Sister Annette Chow of Rio Claro parish
Friday 15 – “His Cross, His Peace” by Lucille Smith of La Romaine parish
Saturday 16 - “The Victorious Cross” by Wilfred Harper of La Romaine parish
On Sunday, September 17 we celebrated the Solemnity of the Triumph of the Cross – our feast day. Mass was celebrated by Fr Stephen Geofroy who is presently shepherding us.
Our church was filled with music by our Saturday and Sunday choirs, joined by St John’s choir of St Augustine. After Mass, there was the “bring and share” lunch. There was plenty to eat and drink, with live accompanying music.
Thanks to Brother Henry Thomas, our Parish Administrator, and members of the Parish Council for their efforts in bringing our celebration to fruition. |
