Sunday October 14, 2007 FROM THE PARISHES
Thanksgiving Mass
for Guayaguayare centenarian

On Sunday, September 9, the parish of Guayaguarare celebrated the 100th birthday of Hyacinth Harris also known as “Ms Di” or “Hya”.

Hyacinth was born on September 11. 1907, the daughter of Son and Amelia Harris née Merrique in the village of Guayaguarare. Her deceased siblings include Hannah, May, Adonis and Albert Harris.

She bore no children but has four nieces and many grand and great grand nephews and nieces from the Harris and Baptiste families. She is closely attached to her relatives from the Merrique, Joab and Lemessy families and many friends.

The lively celebration commenced with parish Mass, concelebrated by Fr Christian Chambers and Fr John Theodore CSSp who preached the homily.

He encouraged all present to trust in God through the various "ups and downs" and stages of one's journey of life.

He focussed on God’s faithfulness to his people and the essential place of prayer and waiting on God to fulfill God's purpose in one's destiny.

Members of the music ministry of Zion Community supported the choir.

The parish showed its care and appreciation for Hyacinth's former multi-ministries and dedication to the Church through word, songs and the gifts of a rocking chair and large cakes in the form of figures of 100! Members of the parish shared refreshments after the Mass.

The nieces of Hyacinth organised a luncheon, supported by close relatives. Leaders of Zion Community, priests and some parishioners also shared in the meal and moments of laughter with Di recalling "the old time days" with gratitude for family and a humble life well lived.

On Tuesday, October 2 the nurses and Dr Ali of the Eastern Regional Health Authority celebrated the "International Year For Older Persons" at the Guayaguarare Health Centre.

Special tribute was paid to Hyacinth Harris and she received several gifts and much love.

Bless the Lord, faithful, humble-hearted people,
Praise and glorify Him forever  (Dn 4:87).
