Praises for Mawasi

Acting President Dr Linda Baboolal and Archbishop Edward Gilbert have praised the 26-year musical ministry of the Mawasi Experience (MXP).

Invited to speak toward the end of last Sunday’s mid-morning Mass at Sacred Heart church at which the group celebrated its 26th  anniversary, Dr Baboolal said she loved all forms of drumming. “There is something about drumming that is earthy…that touches the soul,” she remarked.

Baboolal said she had heard the music of MXP over the years and congratulated them on their determination and perseverance. She opined that the group had thrived because of their spirituality and faith in God “which is evident by your music”.

Main celebrant and homilist was Archbishop Gilbert, while Cathedral/Sacred Heart administrator Msgr Cuthbert Alexander concelebrated.

Focusing on the readings in his sermon, the archbishop said MXP had shown discipleship. He cited an incident in the group’s history when their storage room at Sacred Heart church was burglarised and all their instruments and accessories stolen.

“They had to make a painful decision – begin again or call it off – because of this outrageous act of theft,” The Archbishop said. He added: “You began again and we thank you for it”, for continuing your ministry which “helps people to worship, to be comfortable with their culture and their own rhythm of life”. The congregation – which included former MXP members and supporters – burst into spontaneous applause at this remark.

“Their music touches your heart and lifts you up in worship…worship according to your culture,” Archbishop Gilbert said. “One of the things that gives hope is music. Music is magic. It calms, it heals … their powerful lyrics challenge the faithful to be more dedicated, more committed…,” he stated.

Archbishop Gilbert blessed the group after the intercessory prayers, and a drum was included in the presentation of gifts.

Throughout the Mass, MXP played its music composed over the years – with its African, East Indian and Chinese musical influences.

Before the final blessing and departure, MXP core members Rian Extavour and Neon Niles made presentations to Dr Baboolal and Archbishop Gilbert. – RS
