A proud old boy of Belmont Boys’, Mr La Borde captivated the audience of students and parents with his feature address, reminiscing on his days growing up “behind the bridge” and his experiences as a schoolboy at Belmont.
The boys sat spellbound as he weaved his tale of building his first boat, navigating to Grenada, and convincing his wife to be part of a series of marine adventures culminating in his internationally lauded feat of circumnavigating the globe, for which the La Bordes received the Trinity Cross in 1973.
He encouraged students to kindle their spirit of adventure while broadening their mental horizons by reading the classic works of literature.
In appreciation of his willingness to share his brave adventures with our youth, and his continual recognition and promotion of the impact of our school on his life journey, the school now recognises and awards the Harold La Borde Student of the Year Trophy.
