Easter bonnet parade in San Rafael
by Joy Akien-Prohaska

On Easter Monday, March 28, I was invited to attend an Easter Bonnet parade in San Rafael . I have been living in Toronto for the past thirty years and during this time in Toronto, I have never even heard about an Easter Bonnet parade.

Needless to say I was delighted to be invited and honoured when asked to be one of the four judges. The three other three judges were Linda Sahadeo, Elsie Lynch and June Callender. The participants were not only from San Rafael but also from Brazil , Las Lomas, Talparo and Mundo Nuevo.

The day began with a Kite Flying competition held at the Brazil Recreation Grounds from 11.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Prizes were awarded for the highest flying kite, the smallest kite and the biggest kite etc.

It was good to see the whole community involved, even grandparents made the effort to come out for the Kite Flying competition. After the competition around 3.30 p.m. everyone went over to the Brazil High school auditorium for the Easter Bonnet Parade which began around 4.00 p.m.

Young ones participate in the parade.

Approximately 45 children between the ages of 2 – 12 years participated in the parade. Some of the creations had names like “Glory to the Sun”, “Candy Floss”, “Caribbean Fun” and “Morning Glory”.

One little contestant said that her teacher helped with the making of her outfit. Another father was up to late at night working on is daughter's bonnet and basket.

One contestant even had a real live grey rabbit in her basket. Another's outfit was created from newspaper and was well received by the audience.

Throughout the afternoon we were entertained with taped music appropriate for the occasion. The stage was beautifully decorated and by all indications it was evident that a great deal of work went into making this day a success.

I was truly impressed with the manner in which all those behind the scenes came together and worked well to put on a delightful show.

I take this opportunity to thank Fr Michael Moses and his parish for their warm welcome.

In closing, I pray that God in His goodness would continue to bless Fr Michael with all that he needs as he continues to minister to the parishioners of San Rafael, Brazil, Talparo, Las Lomas and Mundo Nuevo.
