DEAR EDITOR: I am writing, as a young Catholic, in response to the editorial which appeared in this periodical April 10.
To err is human, and Pope John Paul II, having been a human being himself, was not perfect, but the aspects of his blessed life singled out and appointed as “drawbacks” in the aforementioned editorial were certainly not errors.
Pope John Paul's tireless work against the “culture of death”, as he rightly called it, was absolutely in keeping with the Holy Church 's teaching.
Instead of criticising this, we as Catholics should follow his example of remarkable steadfastness through the waves of popular worldly opinion. Let us not view Pope John Paul II through the blind eyes of this world, but pray to see his life through God's eyes. It is only then that we will understand and appreciate what Pope John Paul did for us during his earthly pilgrimage.
Furthermore, if such naive opinions are expressed by a member of our Catholic community, it is remiss of us not to inform that person of their misunderstandings.
It is the responsibility of the voice of the congregation, being in this case a Catholic newspaper, to rectify these views, rather than encourage them. Publishing such views may cause others to be swayed into misguided interpretations of the life of our beloved deceased Pope.
Otherwise, there is a fair chance of people losing faith in such a respectable newspaper as this one.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Catholic News acknowledges that the use of the word “drawbacks” in the editorial of April 10 was unfortunate and misleading. This newspaper is in no way critical of the late Holy Father's “tireless work” against the “culture of death” and regrets any misunderstanding caused by the April 10 editorial. |
