High Carnival standard

San Rafael parish priest shares a letter to his parishioners with readers of Catholic News

Dear Parishioners,

The high standard of our Parish Calypso, Ole Mas and Pretty Mas event, once again revealed the talents invested in our people.

We have really had the opportunity to pretend that we were lots of other things, from angels to prophet to bacchanalists! So we have run the gamut.

We trust that the communities have become more closely knitted together and more trusting in the ability of God to lead and guide according to his own plan.

We look forward to Mr and Mrs Neville Aming continuing to sponsor us as we prepare for a full-scale band next year and to teach us some of the skills of costuming.

Also Chalkdust (Dr Hollis Liverpool) is very willing to give us a workshop or two on the art of calypso, (his latest CD Pan Have we DNA , is superb!), while the Mexican Embassy is looking forward to continuing their relationship with us by the teaching of Mexican dances and the Spanish language. What can we give in return?

The Season of Lent that we are entering, after the fun of Carnival calls us to deep reflection as to who we are and what we are called to be, and the zeal with which we have celebrated the carnival season should overflow into Lent, bringing us to a glorious Easter.

Fr Michael Moses, Parish Priest, San Rafael

'Soaking prayer' and its landslide

DEAR EDITOR: I would like to share a little insight into the weather pattern we are experiencing right now.

As I see what weeks of incessant moderate rain is doing to our land - the ground is fully saturated and therefore cannot hold together anymore, it has to slip and no one or nothing can stop it.

I remember hearing about "soaking prayer", that is keeping on praying for somebody or something, not stopping or giving up even if things don't seem to be changing, and I realised how true this kind of prayer really is and just like the incessant rain seemed to be doing nothing and suddenly one day - landslide.

So it is with soaking prayer. So keep on praying for that person, that situation to change. As sure as the landslide with incessant rain, so will our prayer be answered one day when you least expect it.

Anne B, St Ann 's

A plea for more time with the Blessed Sacrament

DEAR EDITOR: In this year of the Eucharist, our people are asking for more time with the Blessed Sacrament. With most churches closed after morning Mass, or if there is no Mass, closed for the day, it is impossible to satisfy this request.

May I suggest to the parishes, that the churches be opened for some time during the day, preferably after working hours. I understand that this is done already in some churches.

Perhaps the Evening Prayer of the Church could be said, or a reflection on the Gospel of the day be made, or the Rosary could be recited or we may just prefer to sit quietly after a busy day. How reflective and soothing it could be just to sit in the gentle flow of the candlelight, letting the light of our faith light up our souls.

Sr Jean Devenish Huggins, Port of Spain
