Manzanilla beach lime
by Sr Gransaul

The different communities of the Manzanilla parish braved the inclement weather to attend the annual beach lime of the Manzanilla Parish Better World Programme on Saturday, January 22. For the last few years the venue has been the Mayaro RC Church which offers the ideal environment and space for such an event.

The morning was heavily overcast with rain in some areas of the community, only the truly committed parishioner attended. This year under the coconut trees was very wet, luckily, the parish hall was available as usual.

There were no cricket and fishing competitions nor dominoes competition because of the lack of competitors from the various communities and the late start of the day's event. However, those who were there had an enjoyable time. Among the group were two visitors from Ireland and one from England .

There was a talent show in which volunteers from different communities participated. The Fishing Pond community was very well received with their truly rural local talent. The highlight of the day and the last event was the Calypso Competition.

Sharon Francis Harper performed duties of emcee for this event. Anslem Phillip rendered a calypso and gave some well-received jokes.

The Mighty Unknown from the Biche Community successfully defended his crown. The Mighty Red Cap tried hard, but still did not improve on his melody. This year he had two members of the choir as back up but that did not help.

The surprise appearance of Sister Annette Chow, head of the Better World Programme in Trinidad and Tobago , as well as Donalene Lewis and two other members of the organisation gave the group encouragement to keep on this programme.
