The Dominica Medical Association (DMA) has said it sees no problem with present anti-abortion legislation or any need to revisit the present laws.
Dr Davendra Sharma, an executive member of the association, gave this opinion in an invited comment from The Chronicle following calls last week for parliamentarians to reiterate their stance on the abortion issue. The call came from Catholic priest and pro-life advocate, Fr Franklin Cuffy, during activities to mark the Day of Rights of the Child.
Sharma explained that the organisation has no problems with anti-abortion legislation and does not believe a change in legislation is needed. He says however, they maintain the position that if having the baby endangers the life of the mother, an Emergency Pregnancy Termination (EPT), should take place.
So far, he says the DMA has not been approached by any pro-choice group and is intent on abiding by Dominica 's present laws.
