SJC, CIC past pupils assist
school in Haiti and Grenada

Past students of St Joseph 's Convent, Port of Spain and St Mary's College recently donated funds to representatives of schools in Haiti and Grenada , to assist in the rebuilding initiatives of schools, following the devastation wrought by hurricanes last year. The funds, totalling just over ninety thousand dollars, represent the full profits from a fund-raising concert staged jointly by the two schools last November.

According to Halycon Yorke-Young, President of the St Joseph 's Convent Past Pupils' Association, the past students of the two schools combined their efforts to assist the schools in Haiti and Grenada in effecting repairs to their school buildings, so as to reduce the disruption to their education following the hurricanes.

The organisers of the concert are extremely grateful to all artistes who gave of their talent and time, free of charge, to make the event the hugely enjoyable success that it was. Included among those giving freely towards the event were Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars and Excellent Stores Silver Stars steel orchestras, who both accompanied some of the artistes. Also thanked were the main sponsors of the fund-raiser, First Citizens Bank, British Gas and Toyota Trinidad and Tobago Limited.

St Mary's past students gave forty-five thousand dollars to St Martial College in Port au Prince, Haiti, while the St Joseph's Convent past pupils gave a similar amount to their sister convent in Grenville, Grenada. The Provincial Superior of the Holy Ghost fathers in Haiti , Fr Joseph Philipfe who was on a visit to Trinidad , received the funds on behalf of St Martial College

St Martial College was founded in 1865 by the Holy Ghost Fathers and serves several hundred Haitians from all classes of society in a country that is considered to be one of the poorest in the world.
